Why we need a Just Transition

The Just Transition concept was initially developed by trade unions and is now used as a policy tool.

Research demonstrates that the greening of our economies has the potential to create 24 million new jobs. At the same time, 6 million jobs are in risk of being lost. This calls for active policies in order to protect those affected and to ensure a Just Transition, with proactive measures to create opportunities in greener sectors that face decent work deficits.

This session will be a deeper conversation on Just Transition within the field of international development cooperation. It will promote a discussion on how we can move towards a formula that combines decent work, social justice and climate-resilient and low-carbon economy.

The recent report from Union to Union on Just Transition in a developing countries context will be the starting point for the conversation.
